Electric Vehicle Lead

Leads the design, development, and manufacturing process of the mechanical, electrical and software systems used at UCR's first electric race car. This includes developing electrical schematics using Altium Designer for the control systems, Motor controllers, Vehicle Control Unit, Battery Management systems, and more. Developed the software that controls and operates the car. Aided in the development of every aspect of the race car and FSAE organization; the business strategy, marketing, fundraising, and all other aspects that go into manufacturing a formula one style race car.

I am constantly reading articles about the latest discoveries and technological progress with hope to one day add to them. My focus is in liquid rocket propulsion with experience in designing and testing bipropellant and monopropellant rocket components.

Chris Nguyen - Computer Science, 2018

Control Systems Lead

Leads the team that manages vehicle computer and electronics for UCR's first electrical vehicle.
As part of the team, I coordinate with mechanical and electrical engineers to design vehicle behavior for the Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) in C++. The vehicle itself uses the industry standard CAN network to communicate between all of its components. We use industry grade sensors and motor controllers to ensure efficiency and performance; all of which, are programmed by myself and my team.

Paul Carbajal - Mechanical Engineering, 2019

PowerTrain and Uprights Lead

-Lead the design and development of powertrain and uprights assembly on the first electric race car at the University of Califonia, Riverside.
-Included in the powertrain system: gearbox, upright, wheelhub, wheel center, brake caliper, and brake rotor.
-Four custom uprights, housing gearbox, epicyclic system (compound planetary system), to provide a gear reduction of 8.05:1.
-Passionate about automotive, transportation, design and design process.
- Driven by the opportunity to take part in advancing technology and providing progressive contributions to the industry.

I have a passion for composites and aesthetic design; my job is to shepherd the driver’s experience with the car vicariously through the bodywork and cockpit layout.
A well-engineered car is ultimately nothing without an attentively constructed appearance.
The driver is viscerally connected with the car because of the efforts of the Composites and Ergonomics team.

Battery Team Co-Lead

After experience in suspension in another university, joined the battery sub team to learn about a different part of the car. Designed structural components and helped with testing and validation. Excited to see this project coming to life and work alongside such a committed team.

Hayden Karich - Mechanical Engineer, 2018

Composites Team Co-Lead

-Designed the body and the molds for the body in Solidworks for this year's electric car.
-Ran basic CFD in SolidWorks, and worked with the composites team to develop a manufacturing process
-The body is made with a split mold and a separate nosecone mold.
-The molds were machined out of expanded polystyrene and coated with Styroshield and a high gloss gel coat.

Jonathan Afzali - Mechanical Engineer, 2018

Torque Vectoring Team Lead

-Leads the design, development, and implementation of the torque vectoring control system within the Formula SAE electric race car.
-Works with team members in developing an efficient control system using MatLab, Simulink, and Visual Studio, as well as adapting them for the car's interface.
-Coordinates with the control systems team in order to adapt them for the car's interface.
